Do you like vigorous, quick-moving lessons with lots of classroom interaction? If so, you'll like ENGLISH COMES ALIVE! Dr. Witherspoon opens with 60 favorite, wake-them-up activities. Then he writes about singing, role playing, creative speaking, correcting bloopers, acting out words and sentences, and much more, and gives eye-witness stories for students to read as homework. There are 27 clearly written, thoroughly tested chapters.

Two chapters describe love and enthusiasm--attributes that spur students to learn, that direct their nerve cells to branch and connect. The teacher's love and contagious enthusiasm ignite a mental fire, a strong desire to learn English. Then the teacher fans the flames with engaging, interactive activities.

Witherspoon has extensively tested these lessons during 20 summers of teaching overseas. His students have varied from children to middle-aged professors, from clerks to physicians to non-native teachers of English. Whatever the age or profession of his students, he stresses conversation. "The act of talking," he says, "removes the fear of talking." And by removing that fear, the students become fluent.

Users say ENGLISH COMES ALIVE is a "must read" for ESL teachers, a book that is packed with ideas, a book that is creative, spontaneous, challenging, and fun. Yes, and it costs little more than a cup of coffee. Coffee gives a one-time boost--but this book will stimulate you and your happy students for years to come.

I purchased this book a couple of years ago and it was looking forward to some innovative ideas for my ESL students. However I hate to say that ideas were not innovated at all. I found them kind of boring and I had seen these sorts of things already. The songs or old and hackneyed. The Author in my judgment needed to blend some of the old favorites from Americano with more updated tunes and styles. I would not recommend this book to any ESL teacher. I could've come up with these things myself because they are so trite. Also these so-called strategies could be suited really for younger elementary school children. ES L students have much more specific needs. Sorry I don't mean to be mean but I have read many other books for teaching ESL students that offered much more.

Good suggestions on the fly.
This very inexpensive book is a great aid for anyone willing to take on the challenge of teaching English. You do not have to have a teaching degree to create interesting, easy, and fun to follow curriculums for your students. The suggestions in this book not only work, but they hold the attention of the students so they learn quickly and start speaking English quickly. But best of all, they understand what they are saying. Highly recommended. Students learn easier and quicker when it is fun and the time seems to go by quickly.
This book isn't mind-blowing or epiphany-inducing, but it gives some good groundwork and ideas to incorporate in the classroom. Unlike other books, these exercises CAN be adapted to any level and be used anywhere in the world. It's not overreaching in how to teach, but lets the reader/teacher decide what to do with her class given the tools provided. A good read.
It's most enjoyable to vary my teaching. Right after we pledge allegiance, we sing from Chapter 3 by popular demand of my first ever ESL student. Thanks for the suggestions.
I teach English classes for ESL/EFL students and I've found this book to have some great ideas. The activities add an element of fun and spontaneity to the lessons and most of them can be geared toward learners of all ages -- elementary through adults!
I'm not a certified ESL instructor but need ideas to facilitate English conversation and training for summer camps in Europe. This resource does the trick! Chocked full of creative ways to, as the book title suggests, make English come alive. I recommend it as a helpful addition to your collection.
Dr. Witherspoon did an excellent job of providing ideas for teachers of ESL and EFL. This book is useful to both the newbie, as well as established teachers who wish to learn more classroom and assignment tips for teaching students. In addition, this book contains helpful information, exercises and tips for classroom learning in a fun way that students of all ages enjoy. In this book, Dr. Witherspoon has shared his personal experience and recommendations based on several years of working with ESL and EFL students. His passion for teaching ESL and EFL students comes through in his writing. The chapter on loving your students is a wonderful addition to this book.
