I was told to get this book to read to my daughter before our second baby was born. I think the idea of bringing home kittens was a little too abstract for my 2 year old to connect to having a new baby in the house (even when I explained it to her), but this is a very sweet story nonetheless. Katy the dog is so excited about the new kittens that she can't control her excitement and scares/disturbs the kittens -- in the end (spoiler alert, lol), Katy learns that if she is calm and gentle the kittens will snuggle up with her and love being with her. I think if you are having a baby and your older child is older (maybe 3 or 3-and-a-half or older), than it is a great story to help them understand some of the sensitivities around having a new baby in the house. My kids still love this story, and it's fun to read because of the howling and barking if you like reading in an animated way. It is in the bedtime story rotation and one of their favorites.Tags : Katie Loves the Kittens [John Himmelman] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Katie is so excited when Sara Ann brings home three little kittens that she can't stop herself from howling AROOOOO! and trying to run after them. She loves them so much! This book is the current favorite in our household, with a 3-year old and 5-year old who ask for it almost every night. It's a simple story, well told, with illustrations that are extraordinarily successful at conveying the emotions of the characters, particularly Katie, the dog who just loves those kitties so much, and struggles with impulse control. Highly recommended!
I started reading this to my daughter when she was three years old. Now that she is four, she stills loves it just as much as the first time I ever read it to her. It is such a simple story, but it is so much fun to read. I love it.
This book is fun and very sweet. It teaches gentleness and patience. You and your kids will love Katie right away. I gave it as a gift and will again.
Katie is a well-meaning dog who wants to play with her person's new kittens. However, each time she tries to play with them she scares them silly. The illustrations show poor Katie feeling more and more depressed each time she is scolded for scaring the kittens, but eventually everything works out and they become friends. This is a story children will want to read and enjoy over and over again.
Great book!! Fun story line and teaches kids about managing their strong feelings and having empathy for others too. Illustrations of Katie and her feelings are amazing!
An enduring story about a dog, Katie, who wants to socialize--have lots of fun--with three, new-to-the-household, tiny kittens, but...she can't. She doesn't understand that the problem is herself. Eventually, she discovers dog "behavior modification" works. About a 5 minute read with elaboration.

Katie is an adorable little dog who just got 3 feline brothers and sisters. She is very excited to play with them, but her exuberance is over the top and frightening. Katie lands herself in trouble, is misunderstood, and regrets her actions. Eventually she learns to restrain herself and is rewarded with 3 new friends. The situations and emotions in this story are very familiar to preschool aged children and those who spend a lot of time with them. The art is fantastic. The facial expressions of the kittens are priceless, and Katie's little tongue, doing its best to make up for the latest misadventure, is very endearing. I think this is a fantastic book for 4-8 year olds. Entertaining, sympathetic, and an issue near and dear to many this age.
