When I started to talk, it wasn't just a word, I started with Father Fox. Outside of the usual "mamas" and "papas" I didn't utter much until the day I recited "Oh my goodness, oh my dear..." Now, 30 some odd years later, I can still recite that and most of the other rhymes from Father Fox. The rhymes were and still are charming and delightful. Their simple stories with wonderfully mature grammar encourages one to love words in a way that carries on for years to come. I'm so thrilled this book is back in print. I plan to buy it for every parent-to-be along with the other books I adored so much as a kid - Tikitiketembo, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Harold and the Purple Crayon, Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing, Good Night Moon and Where the Wild Things Are. Some great things never get old, Father Fox is definitely one of them.Tags : Father Fox's Pennyrhymes [Clyde Watson, Wendy Watson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I was wondering why a used copy of this classic was so expensive... the product is indeed an orginal, probably from the first soft cover printing in the 1970s, and has no marks on it (even has the original price sticker of $1.50!), but is yellowing a bit and musty, which is nice for old books.
So, here is the point, I was hoping to get this a gift for a new mom and daughter, but it really is a collector's item, which is not really appropriate, either for the family or for the book.
Maybe there should be a separate category in new, used, and vintage/collectors. Maybe I am just naive and should have guessed from the price ($87). So now I have a lovely artifact to re-sell someday, but probably not the gift I was looking for.....
No idea why this is not just still in print.
I got this book for my mom. It was a favorite of hers that she read to us when we were young. She was very very pleased.
I had bought this for my son 40 years ago and now for my granddaughter. It is my all time favorite childrens book!
This book is magical. The rhymes are irresistible. Our family of seven grown children still quote the rhymes and tell them to their own children. Wendy Watson's drawings are charming. We made up our own songs to the rhymes and later discovered Clyde Watson had put several of them to melodies in Father Fox's Feast of Songs. My kids still sing the ones I made up and Clyde's. "Belly and Tubs" became a rocking floor game for two feet to partner's feet and hands held until "the boat tipped over and they tumbled out".
This beautiful delightful book was an old favorite when my children were small and we practically learned it by heart. Our book was lost somehow and it was out of print and I was so thrilled that it had been reprinted, although I wish the book size were bigger since the illustrations are so detailed.
I was sooooo completely delighted to find this old copy of Father Foxe's Penny Rhymes! It brings back thee BEST memories of many hours that I spent with my daughter when she was 5 & 6. We would rock back and forth in this beautiful antique white rocking chair keeping time to the rhymes. It was a very special time, she is now 45 ad will soon be expecting her first grandchild, this was a gift to her on her birthday so she can spend those special times which I would imagine will be doubly "SPECIAL" as she will remember her times with her mother and create new special times with her first grandchild!!! Who knows how far this simple little children's book will reach. I so wish the author could read this and know how much joy this book has provided!
A Few of my favorite childhood memories are the many times My Aunt read this fabulous children's book to me. I must have had her read it many times. She loves this book and we still quote it, and I still read my copy all the time, even though I am eighteen. Now My Aunt's Step-Son has a baby boy and My Aunt is desperate because she wants this same book for her Step-Grandson, but sadly, it is Out of Print. I suggest that anybody who wants to see a re-print edition, click on the link "e-mail a friend about this book," and then send a message to feedback@harpercollins.com and in the space where you add a personal message, please indicate how much you want the book back in print.
