Lost myself in this gorgeous tale of motherhood, parenting, what it takes to make a family and become a cohesive unit. The backdrop of China - the slices of life, the culture, the more and values - were a vivid and rich backdrop. I especially found the adoption parts and the whole process really heart-wrenching. As memoirs go, this is a fine one with tons of depth and a very flowing tone and voice.
I loved Awakening East! Memoirs can be tough, because you really have to have that personal, funny touch to your writing, and Johanna knocks it out of the park. I felt like I was right along side the author as she and her family embarked on their incredible adventure all the way across the world. I really admire that she took such an explorative approach to learn (and also help her children learn) more about where they came from - and being one who loves to travel, myself - it was so neat to explore China through the pages of her book - as I've not yet had the pleasure of stepping foot in this part of the world.

If you love travel, humor and are curious about adoption - give Awakening East a read. You won't be disappointed!

I am a very slow reader when it comes to e-books, so when I got this to review, I knew it was going to take me a bit. Thankfully though I flew through it quite a bit better than most e-books.

I felt like I was living in Johanna's shoes. As she takes us through her journey of life and how she came about adopting children from China...I felt like I was there with her, living right along with her. Which hardly ever happens in books.

While they were living their year in China, it was so interesting to hear customs and regular life in China with their travel journeys while living in China. It was a heart warming book and full of laughter as well, which I didn't expect.

What a fun read! Johanna took me on a great adventure filled with love, compassion, suspense, and humor.
Very heartwarming read
I loved this book! I was hooked from page one and did not want to put it down. Johanna's writing style is so personal I felt like I was on the physical and emotional journey with her. And what a journey it was! From her days in college to becoming an amazing mom, Johanna has truly made the most of her experiences in life, seeking out much more than I would ever dare to. Reading it made me thankful for so many things.
I read the first 265 pages of AWAKENING EAST on a plane ride from Wisconsin to Florida. For once I was disappointed when we landed. I needed another half hour or so in the air to finish the book. What a treat! Johanna's story is heartwarming, funny, revealing, moving, and true. Her family's trip to China was prompted by having 2 adopted Chinese kids and wanting to visit each of their places of birth, but it is so much more. Her accounts of navigating a very foreign country - enrolling her children in Mandarin speaking schools, struggling with expiring visas, dealing with substandard housing and other problems encountered by her family on a weekly basis - provide wonderful reading. I promise you will delight in this lively account of a quirky family's year in China.
